Faces of people have been captured in several popular photographs for decades. Portrait photography stresses on not just the subjects but on their personalities as well, thereby bringing the frozen frames alive.

A well done portrait photograph doesn't adhere to convention, and displays the character in a mental state that makes the picture distinctive. However, more conventional family or single person portraits are also done and they are fit for family albums.

A perfect close up with a sharp focus on the subject's face is what gives portrait photographs that discernible mark of elegance. This is achieved by a common camera trick of making the background slightly obscure and unclear so that the person's face gets the maximum focus. This task of focusing the face becomes simpler with a camera having a wide aperture. However, in some portraits where the person wants to be seen along with the background, especially in photographs taken outdoors, a standard aperture serves the objective better.

Without ample light available to shoot, photographers find it tough to click a good picture. But a good portrait photograph is simpler to take if certain ground rules are followed. A facial profile of a subject sitting by a window looks extraordinary and appealing, especially when daylight illuminates a part of the face. The remaining part of the face can be lighted up by using a reflective object like a white piece of sheet or board. However, Studio lighting can also be modulated to fit the light requirements for high quality portrait photographs, and thus several photographers prefer to click such photographs inside studios.

Another important thing that you must keep in mind is that the more at ease a subject is during the photography session, higher the chances are of getting an ideal portrait photograph. Technical wizardry in photography will yield results only when the subject is comfortable and relaxed, and displays his or her natural self before the camera.
