Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S
If you are looking for a somewhat powerful digital camera that comes in at a reasonable price, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S may be just the camera you are seeking. For starters, you get pictures at 9 Mega Pixels. Similarly priced camera generally have at least a little less.
The size of this camera is both good news and bad. It is somewhat large, but that's only because the LCD screen measures a full 3 inches. The standard right now is about 2.4 inches, so you enjoy the benefits of the larger screen at the expense of a somewhat bulky product.
The biggest drawback however isn't the size (which really isn't much of a problem at all), it would be the ease of use. Not that it is incredibly difficult (it's not), but if you have very limited experience with a digital camera, there are better options available. This camera is best suited for experienced photo takers who either don't want to or can't afford to carry around professional gear.
Now let's talk about the good stuff. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S digital camera comes standard with a 10x optical zoom. And if you looking for features to optimize your images, you'll find them here. For instance the Panasonic Venus Engine IV will fix images and improve noise reduction. You'll also get face detection, but that's pretty much a standard feature in almost all newer digital cameras.
The photos you take are stored on an SD card. To get the most out of this camera you'll probably want to purchase one. And purchase plenty of AA batteries as well. This camera does not waste power, but it certainly has a bunch of features that require extra power. If you'll be taking pictures for the better part of a day, make sure you have plenty of batteries on hand.

So who should get this camera? If you are serious about taking high quality photos, you should. But only if you have at least some experience with a digital camera. This camera has enough features and power to make an amateur look like a professional photographer. For the casual picture taker, the Panisonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S may be a bit costly and it may be a bit bulky. But if you don't mind the extra size and you are someone who gets excited about photography, and if you don't mind a bit of a learning curve, this could be exactly the camera you are looking for.
