Photography As A Hobby

For some, taking great pictures is a way to earn a living. But for most of us, we like photography as a hobby. We want to capture memories and moments. We want scenes that are pleasant to look at. But just because we aren't doing it professionally does not mean we don't want to take the best photographs possible. These pictures are ours to preserve moments that mean something, so of course we want them to look right. And we want to be able to share them as well.

Yes you can point the camera and click, but take just a little time to learn a few skills and techniques, and the results will astound you. So let's get started.

What will you be photographing? What ever it is, get to know it well. If it's a person, know how they look best. If it's your child's sporting event, understand the game so you can anticipate what will or may happen next. It's important that you know your subject.

Get a decent quality camera. No you don't need to spend $1000 dollars to take quality pictures. But you may want a a camera that focuses automatically that can capture the details.

If nature or landscape photography is your thing, always consider the location. Sunlight is great but you don't want it affecting your pictures. When possible, get behind the sun so that you can use it's light to get clear photos without having to deal with heavy glare.

Practice will only make you better. Go to your yard and start taking some pictures. If you are using a digital camera you don't have to worry about making mistakes and wasting money on film. If you don't like the photo, just delete it. By practicing you'll learn framing, how the light affects your photos, and how to best utilize the settings on your camera. You might even get some great shots you'll want to keep. But even if you don't, you'll still be learning. Pay particular attention to the size and shape of the subject. Note it's position and play around with different angles.

When there is no or limited sunlight, you'll need some form of artificial light if you want bright and clear photographs. Almost every camera now has a built in flash, but in many cases it may not be enough depending on what you will be shooting. Again, play around a bit and see if you will need to upgrade to a larger flash.

Use a camera tripod, especially if you are zooming in for close up shots.

Photography can be addicting. The more you do it, the more you will want to. Who knows, you may like it so much you'll want to make a career out of it.
